Jihou Hezi Gui 紀侯貉子簋 in the Collection of Östasiatiska Museet, Swedish National Museums of World Culture: Art, Casting Techniques, and the Eastern Frontier of the Western Zhou Dynasty
The Jihou Hezi gui 紀侯貉子簋, a ritual bronze vessel dated to the mid-Western Zhou period (ca. 10th century BC) and cast by the Ji State 紀國, a regional polity located in the eastern territories of the Western Zhou dynasty, is currently preserved at the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities in Stockholm. The pre-modern conservation method conceals the vessel’s technical features, making it difficult to study its internal structure. This not only created doubts about its authenticity but also prevented scholars from uncovering information on the regional bronze-casting techniques, history, and culture of the Ji State.
By subjecting the Jihou Hezi gui to high-voltage X-ray examination, this project aims to reveal the traces left by its section-mold casting process, mostly importantly, the spacers, which can indicate its authenticity. In addition, by contextualizing the results archaeologically and historically, it is hoped that this can lead to a new understanding of the technology, culture, and history of the Ji State during the middle Western Zhou period.
