The Department of Literature and Cultural Studies gathers together academic and teaching staff specialising in Chinese literature, English literature, comparative literature, creative writing, cultural studies, and history. This breadth of expertise makes the Department distinctive in the context of tertiary education in Hong Kong. Together, we aspire to become a centre of research excellence and quality higher education as well as a hub for vibrant cross-cultural exchange.
Colleagues throughout the department pursue active research agendas, build international networks, and engage community members. Members of the department often collaborate with EdUHK research centres, including the Research Centre for Chinese Literature and Literary Culture and the Centre for Popular Culture in the Humanities. The department actively supports undergraduate, taught postgraduate, and research postgraduate programmes in a number of areas. In these programmes, we offer all students solid training in skills that are both permanently valuable and urgently necessary, including critical thinking, in-depth interpretation, intercultural sensitivity, and social responsibility. We are happy to receive inquiries from prospective research postgraduate students.
EdUHK has a unique heritage and role as an institute of teacher training, and LCS colleagues never lose sight of the significant contribution made by literary works and other kinds of texts to the processes of learning and teaching. However, the department considers literary, cultural, and historical texts not only as pedagogical tools for use in the classroom, but also as powerful forces that shape society and create meaning for individuals. Please join us in our continued exploration of the worlds of literature and culture!
