来来,大家一起玩’ (C’mon, let’s play together): grassroots planning from a Bourdieusian perspective

On September 24, Professor Xiao Lan Curdt-Christiansen from the Department of Education at the University of Bath, UK, conducted a vibrant seminar for EdUHK faculty and students. Moderated by Prof. Gu, Dean of the Graduate School, and Academic Advisor Dr. John Patkin, the seminar titled "C'mon, Let’s Play Together: Grassroots Planning from a Bourdieusian Perspective" explored critical themes in language planning.

Professor Curdt-Christiansen focused on her ongoing research regarding language-planning engagement within Chinese transnational communities in the UK. Utilizing Pierre Bourdieu's key concepts, including habitus, disposition, and the three forms of capital (social, cultural, and economic), she conducted a discourse analysis and qualitative narrative enquiry of Chinese mothers living in the UK.

The study highlights how heritage languages can thrive despite symbolic structural constraints that typically hinder heritage language learning. It enriches the field of Family Language Policy (FLP) by demonstrating how parents leverage their social, cultural, and economic capital to access resources that support their children's development of transnational cultural capital.

Attendees expressed great interest in the topic, engaging in thoughtful discussions during the Q&A session. Professor Curdt-Christiansen addressed various questions regarding methodology and topic selection, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas.
