Aims & Outcomes

Students who take English Language as Second Major will:

  • have in-depth knowledge of English as a language; and
  • advance their knowledge in the disciplines of linguistics, literature and applied English studies, in areas such as Phonetics and Phonology, Lexis, Morphology and Semantics, Grammar, Written and Spoken Discourse, Literature and Language Arts, Psycholinguistics, and Sociolinguistics.

Pre-requisite Requirements and Other Conditions for Declaring a Second Major
  1. IELTS 6.5 or above (with no paper below 6);
  2. Year 1 GPA: 3.00 or above; and
  3. Applicants may be invited for an interview.

(Note: Students getting an average of Grade B or above in Year 1 mandatory English Enhancement courses will be considered more favorably.)

Selection CriteriaApplications will be endorsed by Programme Leader of BEd(EL) followed by approval of Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies).

36 cps (3 cps/course), including:

  • 24 cps of Core Courses; and
  • 12 cps of Elective Courses
Remarks
  • All Second Majors will not lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • Neither teaching practice nor immersion will be arranged.
Important Notes
  • The Second Major is housed within and managed by BEd(EL) under the current management structure.
  • The University does not guarantee that there is no schedule conflict between the courses of students’ First Major and Second Major.
  • If students are unable to fulfill the course requirements of their Second Major, they may consider extending the period of study and pay additional fee on a pro-rata basis to complete the requirements for a Second Major.
  • Students who are unable to complete a Second Major by the end of graduation may consider claiming a Minor in English Language instead.
  • Any aspect of the course and course offerings (including, without limitation, the content of the Course and the manner in which the Course is taught) may be subject to change at any time at the sole discretion of the University. Without limiting the right of the University to amend the course and its course offerings, it is envisaged that changes may be required due to factors such as staffing, enrolment levels, logistical arrangements and curriculum changes.

Exemption Arrangement for Students Pursuing PGDE after Graduation from English Language as a Second Major List of Course Offered in Previous Years

 

PGDE(P) exemption will be considered if students have successfully completed the corresponding courses from the English Language Second Major curriculum.

 

No exemption arrangement will be made for PGDE(S) since courses for the English major students are all methods and curriculum related courses, and will not be covered in the English Language Second Major curriculum.

  • Successful completion of ENG1249 English Grammar for Teachers I and ENG2250 English Grammar for Teachers II qualifies for exemption from ENG5214 Pedagogical Grammar of PGDE(P);
  • Successful completion of ENG1326 Introduction to English Phonetics and Phonology and ENG3400 Advanced Phonology qualifies for exemption from ENG5212 English Phonetics and Phonology for English Language Teaching of PGDE(P); and
  • Successful completion of ENG3371 Children’s and Adolescent Literature qualifies for exemption from ENG5215 Literature and Language Arts in English of PGDE(P).
