I received my PhD degree from the University of Chicago. I am a cultural historian, focusing on the history of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and history of Hong Kong. I have completed a book manuscript on PRC-made Opera Films in Cold War HK. Now, I am writing a book on the PRC opera reform, 1949-1966. If you are interested in doing Chinese history with a focus on the production, circulation, reception, and appropriation of operas, films, posters, paintings, and other cultural products, you are welcome to work with me. I am the Principal Investigator for the project titled “Disappearing Voices: An Oral History of Leftist Film Workers during Cold War Hong Kong.” I also received a grant from the Early Career Scheme with a full score, which won me the Research Grants Council’s Early Career Award.
I also actively collaborated with colleagues in prominent Chinese Mainland universities and secured a research grant offered by the General Program of the National Social Science Fund of China (NSSFC), which is a nationwide, competitive grant program.
I am the author of two books, namely Model Opera and the Politics of the Cultural Revolution 《样板戏与文化大革命的政治思想》and From Confucius to Feng Zikai: A Collection of Chinese Historical Plays《从孔子到丰子恺：中国历史剧本合集》. I am also the author of several articles on Hong Kong leftist movement and the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution.
I served as a member of two important KT projects. The projects produced a series of animations featuring the life stories of key historical figures. I wrote animation scripts for 15 of those figures. The episodes and other relevant materials can be found here:
