The Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies (LML) and Centre for Research on Linguistics and Language Studies (CRLLS) co-organised a workshop series on ‘Teaching English Word Stress and Intonation: Rules, Acoustics, Tools, and AI’ on 22, 24, and 25 November 2023. As the crucial part of a University Knowledge Transfer (KT) project led by Dr Rebecca Chen Hsueh Chu, the series aims to provide language teachers with hands-on training in effective teaching approaches and state-of-the-art English word stress and intonation technologies. Delivered by Dr Chen and her team, the workshops introduced successful teaching approaches and research findings from her previous GRF projects. Participants actively engaged in hands-on practice sessions exploring various teaching methods, including rule-based, acoustic-based, AmPitch, WASP, Murf, ChatGPT and Teachable Machine for word stress and intonation. With around 170 participants from Hong Kong, different regions of mainland China, Belgium, Japan, Malaysia, and the UK, the series received positive feedback for its insightful content and practical applications. In general, this workshop series made a profound impact, fostering teachers who are eager to improve English language teaching, particularly on word stress and intonation, through the innovative integration of rule-based and acoustic-based approaches, along with cutting-edge technologies.
