Kia Ora from Wellington! Welcome to the capital of New Zealand -- where I had my immersion programme for two months during the summer holiday. My mind flashed back to my days in this gorgeous place with the chilling vibe, decent weather, and magnificent architecture.
Before I set off for the immersion programme, I used to live a hectic life in Hong Kong without a chance to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the environment. However, thanks to the University and the Hong Kong government, the mandatory immersion programme for Bachelor of Education Honours (English Language) students allows me to drop my heavy burden and enjoy teaching, learning, and living in New Zealand.
New Zealand is a country that attaches great importance to the protection of natural environment. There is enormous support from both the government and citizens to embrace environmental sustainability by developing renewable energy and maintaining green habits. I was stunned when I first noticed the large number of windmills and the wide diversity of wild animals in New Zealand. The captivating natural environment, cloudless starry night, and the animals on the farm reminded me of my commitment as a global citizen to take good care of our beloved planet.
Teaching in Wellington is another highlight of the journey, and the practice in New Zealand is very different from that in Hong Kong. Students usually sit on mats instead of chairs in the classroom, with lots of exercise time. Instead of learning through textbook, they tend to acquire knowledge through observation in daily life. Meanwhile, students are also very lovely and always swarm you for a hug. These show a stark contrast between teaching in Hong Kong and in Wellington. The whole journey is absolutely inspiring and provocative, and I wish I could apply what I have learned in my teaching in future.
Overall, the immersion programme allows me to enjoy my life by continuously learning from New Zealand’s green policies, education system, and lifestyle. I am grateful for having such a delightful and treasurable experience that I could never forget!
