The Department of Literature and Cultural Studies (LCS) organised a Poetry Writing Competition to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Faculty of Humanities (FHM) and to promote literature writing in the university. Undergraduate students, postgraduate students, staff members and alumni of The Education University of Hong Kong were invited to submit modern Chinese or English poems with the theme of “Anniversary”.
The competition received many well-written submissions. After a preliminary review conducted by judges from LCS, Mr Yam Gong and Dr Eddie Tay were invited to select the winning works for the Chinese category and English category respectively. The judges found poetic wit, polished poetic techniques, and insightful thoughts from the winning works. Drawing on personal memories and collective experiences at the university, the winners shared their reflections on the multifaceted meaning of anniversaries, and suggested how every moment is precious and could be a celebration in itself.
LCS organised an award ceremony and celebration event on 25 November 2022. The event started with welcoming speeches by Prof John Nguyet Erni (Dean of FHM) and Prof Eric Yu Kwan Wai (Acting Head of LCS). Then, each winner of the competition was awarded a certificate and a book voucher, and all the winners read their poems. Lastly, Mr Yam Gong and LCS colleagues read international literary works related to the idea of an anniversary to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of FHM.
