The Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies (LML) regularly organises seminars related to linguistics and digital humanities. The Seminar Series on Digital Humanities (DH) was launched in April 2021 and so far, 10 related seminars have been organised. With the support from speakers from all over the world and collaborating units, research from various linguistic aspects was presented, such as sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics and clinical linguistics.
From the various seminars, participants were able to understand more about the current development of language studies and tools for analysing different linguistic phenomena. For instance, a recent seminar in October 2022 titled “Linguistic Narrative and Cognitive Thinking Related to COVID-19” by Dr Chen Sunglin from Cheng Kung University talked about how the epidemic is presented in Taiwan as well as the relationship between language and society in the COVID-19 context. The topic focused on the current global situation and attracted more than 80 participants from across the globe.
In Dr Kataoka Shin’s seminar, he talked about his latest Lord Wilson Heritage Trust project and the use of his Early Cantonese Bible Database to access Cantonese biblical texts. The seminar attracted a pool of participants who were interested in Cantonese Studies.
