Many Western Christian missionaries came to China during the late Qing Dynasty. Many people know that the translation of the Chinese Bible began with the Western missionaries, but it is less well-known that the missionaries in Guangdong also translated the Bible and compiled Christian literature in Cantonese. Missionary publications in Cantonese can be divided into four main categories: Bibles, Works of Christian Literature, Dictionaries, and Textbooks. The book authored by Dr Kataoka Shin and Ms Yin-Ping Cream Lee is a selection of Cantonese publications by missionaries from 1828 to 1927. In addition to introducing their lives and works, the two authors also introduce the early Cantonese language, so that readers can understand the writings of the missionaries more easily. For those who are interested to know their works in detail, they can refer to the appendices of the book.
