On 7 October 2022, the Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies and students from the course GEL2017 “Exploring Japanese Culture from Hong Kong” presented a Kimono dressing event, demonstrated by a professional Kimono dresser Ms Hiroko Kawakami. This is the first mini-cultural event for this new GE course.
Ms Kawakami, who has lived in Hong Kong for decades, has been teaching local students about Kimono culture for years. During the event, she introduced different types of Kimono, including Furisode (振袖), Kuro-Tomesode (黒留袖), Homongi (訪問着) and related accessories, followed by a detailed demonstration of how to put on a Kimono properly. Two students were selected to dress in Furisode (worn by young ladies on festive occasions) and Yukata (a simple form of Kimono worn in summertime). Attendees also learned how to stroll in a Kimono elegantly, tide the belt (Obi) in various traditional and modern styles, and properly fold and store a Kimono.
The attendees raised numerous questions about Kimono during the two-hour cultural event, which ended with a delightful round of applause.
