The 4th Advanced Workshop 2022 on International Chinese Teaching of International Baccalaureate (IB) Programmes, organised by the Department of Chinese Language Studies (CHL) of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), was held online successfully in the week of 18-22 July 2022.
Teachers interested in IB Chinese teaching worldwide attended this 5-day workshop to discuss the current development of IB Chinese teaching and its teaching focus at different age levels.
Eight IB experts, chief examiners and principals of international schools were invited to give lectures. Over 10 IB Chinese head teachers, examiners, and senior teachers were invited to share their teaching practices. In addition, around 40 teachers and researchers working in primary schools, secondary schools, universities and educational research institutions from Germany, New Zealand, mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong participated the workshop.
The educational philosophy and teaching mode of IB have brought different perspectives to traditional Chinese language teaching. Several speakers mentioned at the workshop that the IB curriculum is designed to encourage students to apply and translate what they have learned into the real world, emphasising respect for the literary heritage of their native languages. Regardless of whether it is a Chinese as a first language course or a Chinese as a second language course, IB Chinese teachers should help students from different backgrounds learn from their learning experience of exploring their first and second language and develop their own international vision, so to create a better world through education.
Dr Liang Yuan, Acting Head of CHL at EdUHK, pointed out that EdUHK would take advantage of the opportunity of the IB curriculum development to gather more like-minded people to work together on the research and development of IB Chinese language and literature teaching.
