LML Gained Positive Feedback in the Departmental Review and Benchmarking Exercise

The Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies (LML) completed its second departmental review and benchmarking exercise in March 2022 via Zoom. Chaired by Professor Stefan Th. Gries from the Department of Linguistics of University of California, Santa Barbara, USA, the Review Panel included Professor Umberto Ansaldo from the School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry of Curtin University, Australia, Mrs Shirley Duthie, Principal of The Education University of Hong Kong Jockey Club Primary School, Dr Chan Ka Shing Kevin, Head of the Department of Psychology, EdUHK and Dr Liu Fung Ming Christy, Associate Head of the Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies, EdUHK.
During the three-day online visit from 28 February to 2 March 2022, the panel members met the staff members of the Department, the Faculty, graduates and students to evaluate the Department’s performance and achievements in five key areas: (a) Learning and Teaching; (b) Research, Public Engagement and Knowledge Transfer; (c) Community Services; (d) Administration and Resource Management; and (e) Strategic Development. Positive and constructive comments were received from the panel for the Department’s future development. Panel members were impressed by the wide range of linguistics, language studies and modern language courses offered by the Department. Furthermore, the adoption of various teaching modes and technologies by LML colleagues has enhanced students’ learning experience. The panel has also identified a number of good practices, such as the adherence to the QA and QE mechanisms in terms of responding to feedback given by students and other stakeholders, the development of internship and cultural activities that brings positive effects on students’ learning, pastoral care given to students, and the research performance as reflected by the RAE exercise.

Programme Information Hub Launched to Promote the New BA(ESDC) Programme
On 14 April 2022, FHM launched its first one-stop programme information hub for the new programme, Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in English Studies and Digital Communication, BA(ESDC), to attract public interest in the programme, showcase its strengths, communicate with potential applicants, and answer frequently asked questions. The website features useful information, such as a virtual campus tour, admission information, scholarship details, FAQs, and 4-minute taster class videos on the topics of “Using PRAAT to change the gender of your voice” by Dr Albert Lee Kwing Lok and “Building a chatbot using Amazon Lex” by Dr Lau Chaak Ming.

Annual Gathering to Expand the Network of Chinese Teaching and Research with Local Schools
To strengthen curriculum development and expand the network of teaching and research with local primary and secondary schools, the Department of Chinese Language Studies (CHL) has launched the “Learning and Teaching Mentorship Scheme” in 2020/21. In the project’s first phase, 37 principals, head teachers, and senior language education experts from local and international schools have been invited to serve as advisors. By 2021/22, the number of advisors was expanded to 48, and an annual gathering of advisors was held on 11 February 2022.
