To enhance students’ learning experience of modern languages and to promote multilingualism and multiculturalism, the Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies (LML), with the support of French international tutors and Japanese international tutors, organised a number of online non-formal language and cultural activities on French and Japanese. The activities provided a relaxed environment for students and staff to appreciate the French and Japanese languages and cultures. The participants could also take these activities as an opportunity to practice their language skills by interacting with native speakers.
The French international tutors, Joris and Salwa, introduced food, games, movies and landscapes in the activities such as “Welcome to Paris”, “Explore France and Japan” and “French Movie Night”. The Japanese international tutors, Namiko and Aoi, organised a wide range of activities relating to Japanese cultures, such as festivals, exercises, flowers, movies, landscapes, cuisine and Japanese sounds in daily life. In some sessions such as the origami workshop and the radio exercise class, participants could have hands-on activities too.
In May 2022, Salwa and Aoi prepared a series of online mini-lessons to promote the French and Japanese languages respectively. In these lessons, students could have a taste of the language courses by learning some simple daily expressions. They also got advice from the tutors on how to overcome the challenges of learning foreign languages.
