Sharing the Research Findings: The 2nd Second Language Acquisition Symposium

The Department of English Language Education (ELE) held the 2nd Second Language Acquisition (SLA) Symposium featuring seven emerging and well-established second language acquisition scholars from Hong Kong and abroad sharing in Opening Keynote online on 5 March 2022.
In particular, Dr Aline Godfroid from Michigan State University has given an overview on eye tracking in second language acquisition; Dr Jookyoung Jung from The Chinese University of Hong Kong shared her views on the effects of pragmalinguistic support on a collaborative suggestion-giving task. Dr Gavin Bui from The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong elaborated on the creativity, functional adequacy and linguistic performance in young learners’ EFL writing. Dr Xuyan Qiu from the Hong Kong Metropolitan University discussed the impact of task complexity on second language learner engagement. Dr Gaia Chiuchiu from the University of Portsmouth and Dr Alessandro Benati from the University of Hong Kong compared the effects of structured input and textual enhancement in the acquisition of Italian subjective of doubt forms. And Dr Pauline Mak discussed peer feedback in second language writing. The symposium was well received by all the 230 researchers and postgraduate students attending the event.

Programme Information Hub Launched to Promote the New BA(ESDC) Programme
On 14 April 2022, FHM launched its first one-stop programme information hub for the new programme, Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in English Studies and Digital Communication, BA(ESDC), to attract public interest in the programme, showcase its strengths, communicate with potential applicants, and answer frequently asked questions. The website features useful information, such as a virtual campus tour, admission information, scholarship details, FAQs, and 4-minute taster class videos on the topics of “Using PRAAT to change the gender of your voice” by Dr Albert Lee Kwing Lok and “Building a chatbot using Amazon Lex” by Dr Lau Chaak Ming.

Annual Gathering to Expand the Network of Chinese Teaching and Research with Local Schools
To strengthen curriculum development and expand the network of teaching and research with local primary and secondary schools, the Department of Chinese Language Studies (CHL) has launched the “Learning and Teaching Mentorship Scheme” in 2020/21. In the project’s first phase, 37 principals, head teachers, and senior language education experts from local and international schools have been invited to serve as advisors. By 2021/22, the number of advisors was expanded to 48, and an annual gathering of advisors was held on 11 February 2022.
