Ms Xiong Ruisi, Graduate of MATCIL (2021)
After graduating from the Master of Arts in Teaching Chinese as an International Language (MATCIL) programme, I became a music teacher and Chinese teaching assistant at the Han Academy. Han Academy is a “Through-train” international school with International Baccalaureate (IB), International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and A-level courses, which is also my MATCIL Field Experience school. The MATCIL programme has equipped me to accumulate teaching methods, knowledge and skills in language subjects, and provided me with professional teaching opportunities. It also helped me to enhance my confidence in becoming a teacher in an international school.
I focus on the integrated interdisciplinary inquiry units in my language and music teaching recently. I used to adopt teaching methods such as inquiry cycle and task-based teaching. We also prepare lessons around the same inquiry unit with teachers of various subjects and different nationalities. We often utilise technology and information skills in our teaching, and we need to acquire intercultural communication skills. Apart from that, we participated in various international teacher training workshops. All of the methods and skills mentioned above are what I have come into contact with, understand, and learn in the MATCIL programme.
Learning and practice are inseparable. Becoming a teacher requires continuous inquiry, practice, adjustment and reflection. Learning is always pleasurable. I am very grateful for the MATCIL programme which leads me to open the door of language learning and teaching.
