Ms Cheung Sin Yee, Graduate of BA(Lang Studies) (2017)
Students majoring in language may have a notion: Must we be a teacher? My answer is no.
As a sports reporter in a local online news portal for five years, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to graduate from the BA(Lang Studies) Chinese Major programme, which has taught me the importance of mastering good language competency. The foundation writing techniques attained from my undergraduate studies, such as the selection of precise vocabulary for presenting my thoughts and organisational skills in writing, have contributed to the success of my career. Being a front-liner using words to record and relay stories to the public for years, I agree that a person's language literacy level can reflect the degree of success in career development.
With the rapid development of mobile technology and social networks, social media is undoubtedly ingrained in people's everyday lives. Being global citizens in the contemporary world, we cannot live without language and words. While images and videos play the dominant role in various communication channels, language still serves as the backbone in facilitating information exchange in virtual and real-life contexts. It is not an exaggeration to conclude that having good language proficiency is the key to success for everything, and this should be the belief as a graduate majoring in language.
Language is more than one way out. You can be anyone you want.
