The Centre for Research on Chinese Language and Education (CRCLE) and the Department of Chinese Language Studies (CHL) of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) organised an online seminar entitled the “Distinguished Scholar Joint Talk on Chinese Education: Learning Chinese under a Multilingual and Multi-cultural background”, with the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL) on 27 August 2021. The joint talk was very well received by the 153 participants coming from different academic institutions.
Two presentations were arranged in the joint talk. The title of the first presentation was “Seize the Opportunity to Learn Chinese as Second Language: Learning Chinese History in Chinese”. It was delivered by Professor Pamela Leung Pui Wan from CHL of EdUHK. She outlined the difficulties that non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students may face in learning the Chinese language and Chinese history. She also probed the basic vocabularies and typical features of academic language adopted by Chinese history textbooks in Hong Kong. The results of this study could further provide academic suggestions on teaching NCS students Chinese history in Chinese.
Dr Li Li from SCCL delivered the second presentation, titled “The Chinese speaking and narrative skills of primary students in Singapore”. She presented a research focusing on investigating Chinese narrative skills and speaking skills among primary students in Singapore. Dr Li introduced the design of teaching intervention for enhancing students’ Chinese narrative skills in the bilingual context of Singapore and its teaching efficiency. Dr Li also extended the discussion on the factors that affected students’ Chinese learning performance in Singapore.
The joint talk has further enhanced the influence of CRCLE in the area of Asia-Pacific Chinese language education, and strengthened the connections between CRCLE and other international organisations. Upcoming talks will be announced soon.
