The Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies, the Centre for Research on Linguistics and Language Studies and the Department of Social Sciences jointly hosted the International Conference on Gender, Language and Education (ICGLE) from 2 to 4 December 2020 via Zoom. It successfully brought together academics, researchers, community leaders, education practitioners and research postgraduate students from the worldwide community to explore equality and diversity issues in language and education through a gendered lens. The conference theme was “Gender, Language and Education: Equality and Diversity Issues in Asia and Beyond”. There were around 70 paper presentations and themed panel discussions covering topics related to Sexuality Diversity, Gender and Literature, Gender and Language, and Gender and Education. More than 80 local and international scholars from Asia, America, Australia, Europe and the Middle East joined the conference.
Several distinguished guests and keynote speakers were invited to join the event, including Mr Ricky Chu Man Kin (Chairperson of Equal Opportunities Commission), Professor Theresa Der-lan Yeh from National Taiwan University, Dr Jane Sunderland from Lancaster University and Ms Zuriel Oduwole. Ms Oduwole is an 18-year-old film maker and a passionate activist for the education of girls in Africa. She is the youngest person profiled by Forbes. The keynote sessions attracted over 200 local and international participants. The three keynote sessions were open to the public on Zoom webinar as part of our community response to the COVID-19 global pandemic. They attracted over 200 local and international participants.
This cross-faculty collaboration enabled us to build stronger communities on research work on equality and diversity issues. The research impacts created can facilitate social betterment and help unleash people’s full potential, making the world more equal and inclusive for everyone.
