In April 2020, the Centre for Language in Education (CLE) held its 4th Creative Writing Contest. The Organising Team was led by the International Tutors, Ms Maria Belhaddad and Ms Viviana Gonzalez Lobato with help from other International Tutors. The contest was open to all full-time students with an aim of encouraging students who were keen on writing to share their ideas and creative compositions.
For this year’s contest, the organiser adopted a different approach; instead of providing a theme or topic, they provided a photograph taken by a student. This not only encouraged students who are into art and photography to have a platform where they could share their work, but also allowed potential students who wish to enter the contest to have more room for creativity. After all, “one picture is worth more than a thousand words”. Thus, the organiser wanted to give an opportunity for students to share their interpretations of the provided picture through prose or poetry.
A jury board comprised of International Tutors carried the first round of the winners’ selections, and four contestants moved to the second round. In the second round, students were invited to vote for their favourite compositions on both Facebook and Instagram (@ASLLC), and students were very responsive in this regard. The votes were closed on 15 April and after calculating all the votes from students and International Tutors, the winners were as follows:
- Winner: Onuoha Gloria Chioma (Year 3 student of BA[Lang Studies]&BEd[EL])
- 1st runner up: May-Ya-Mon-Kyaw (Year 4 student of BSocSc[GES])
- 2nd runner up: Ng Ching Man (Year 4 student of BEd[CL])
- Honourable mentions: Hu Diqin (Year 4 student of BEd[CL]) and Lo Shi Yu (Year 2 student of BA[Lang Studies]&BEd[EL])
The winning entries have been uploaded to the CLE website. The event was successful and the organiser would like to warmly thank all parties who were involved in both the organisation and the voting processes.
