A 13-member delegation from the Department of Chinese Language Studies (CHL) conducted fruitful academic exchanges on Chinese language education with faculty members of Princeton University and Columbia University in the United States from 25 to 30 April 2019.
Professor Si Chung Mou, Head of CHL and Dr Liang Yuan, Associate Head of CHL, were invited to present papers at the International Conference on Chinese Language Instruction organised by Princeton University, covering topics on International Baccalaureate (IB) teaching concepts, teaching Chinese as a second language, and the influence of phonetic association on Chinese character writing.
To further promote a cross-national and cross-regional academic platform for Chinese language education, CHL members shared with the scholars of the two universities the latest research articles of the department published in the International Journal of Chinese Language Education, New Perspectives in Chinese Language Teaching and Culture, and New Perspectives in Chinese Language Teaching and Research.
Through the integrated knowledge and strength of scholars and experts in Greater China, Asia, Europe and North America, the three publications saw constructive academic collaborations between EdUHK, Columbia University and various other overseas institutions to enhance research in Chinese language education and explore the significance of Chinese culture in the world today.
The visit was arranged with the aim of strengthening EdUHK’s academic cooperation and connections with top universities worldwide, as well as facilitating the development of international Chinese teaching at EdUHK.

The chosen book for 2019 is Shaun Tan’s delightful wordless graphic novel, The Arrival. As part of our Student Ambassador duties, we have been doing reading workshops and storytelling sessions in many schools, in order to share The Arrival with primary and secondary school students.

Updates from Centre for Language in Education
The Centre for Language in Education (CLE) plays an integral part of the students’ language learning in the University by offering the regular Chinese, English and Putonghua enhancement programmes and supplementing the formal curriculum with non-formal language learning activities including various workshops for preparing students for the public language tests. To address the diverse language learning needs of different groups of students in 2018/19, CLE works closely with different units of the University, eg the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts (on the music busking activities to connect people through music and languages), the Department of Early Childhood Education (on the support for non-Chinese-speaking students), the Faculty of Education and Human Development (on the pilot scheme of International English Language Test System [IELTS] and Putonghua Shuiping Ceshi for higher diploma students), etc.
