Three Scholars of the Faculty of Humanities Receive the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2016

Three scholars from the Faculty of Humanities have received the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2016 organised by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.  The awardees are as follows:

 

Artist of the Year (Arts Criticism) 

Professor Chan Kwok Kou Leonard

Chair Professor of Chinese Literature, Department of Literature and Cultural Studies and Director of the Research Centre for Chinese Literature and Literary Culture

 

Artist of the Year (Literary Arts) 

Dr. Wong Leung Wo

Associate Professor, Department of Literature and Cultural Studies

 

Award for Young Artist (Literary Arts)

Mr. Wong Yu Bon Nicholas

Teaching Fellow, Department of Literature and Cultural Studies

 

 

The Hong Kong Arts Development Awards is an annual highlight of the local arts scene. It commends outstanding arts practitioners and recognises schools, organisations and individuals for their significant contributions, dedication and support to the development of arts in Hong Kong.  “The Artist of the Year” recognises arts practitioners who have achieved artistic excellence in their respective art forms while “The Award for Young Artist” recognises young and emerging arts practitioners. These awards are organised into a number of categories covering arts criticism, dance, drama, film, literary arts, media arts, music and visual arts and xiqu.

 

Professor Chan Kwok Kou Leonard is the Editor-in-Chief of the 12 volumes of The Compendium of Hong Kong Literature (1919-1949) published in 2016. Together with the editorial team, he recorded old literary materials which are valuable and significant to Hong Kong’s cultural memories. He is awarded for this remarkable contribution to the promotion and preservation of Hong Kong literature.  Dr Wong Leung Wo is a creative writer in poetry, prose, fiction and criticism. He was a multi-times winner of the Youth Literary Awards and Awards for Creative Writing in Chinese and was also a winner of the Fiction Category in the 13th Hong Kong Biennial Awards for Chinese Literature for his fiction collection, Breakthrough from Hell. Mr Wong Yu Bon Nicolas is one of the few English poets in Hong Kong. He won the 28th Annual Lambda Literary Award (under the category of Gay Poetry) for his poetry collection Cravesse in 2016. He is the first Asian poet receiving this honour since the establishment of the Lambda.
