Dialogue with Dixon: Seeking Asylum in Hong Kong
Date: | 6 February 2018 (Tuesday) |
Time: | 5:30-7:30 pm |
Venue: | B3-P-12 |
Abstract
The acceptance rate for refugee claims in Hong Kong is less than 1%, one of the lowest among developed regions. In addition to the low recognition rate and lengthy processing time, asylum seekers also face multiple challenges in their everyday lives. A refugee from Ghana, our guest speaker Dixon’s aim is to tackle cultural prejudice and bring the community together through rap music.
In this dialogue Dixon will share his personal story of fleeing his home and country, and how he happened to come to Hong Kong. He will discuss immigration in Hong Kong, the treatment of asylum seekers by Hong Kongers and the government, and his feelings about being an asylum seeker in this city. He will also reflect upon his use of rap music to bring communities together.
