Stephen W.K. Chiu is Chair Professor of Sociology, Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies, and Associate Dean (International Exchange), The Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, The Education University of Hong Kong. He was the Co-Director of the Academy of Hong Kong Studies from 2017 to 2024. Prior to joining the Education University in 2017, he had served as the Co-Director of the Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies and Professor of Sociology, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He completed his PhD from Princeton University and has been focusing his research on the sociological study of Hong Kong from a comparative and historical perspective. His current research topics include education, social stratification and inequality, social movement, cultural industries, youth identities and traditional Chinese medicine.
He has been active in professional and community service. His public service records include serving as part-time member of the Central Policy Unit and member of HKSAR Government's Commission on Poverty. Between 2009 and 2017, he had also been the Chair of the CDC-HKEAA Committee on Liberal Studies (Senior Secondary) responsible for the design and revision of the subject's curriculum. Recently he is the adviser of the parent-led organization EDiversity that promotes educational innovation in basic education and has worked with charitable foundations on career and life education in Hong Kong. He is also an active contributor to public discussions of policy issues in Hong Kong through the news media.
