Paul G. Harris, Chair Professor of Global and Environmental Studies, has been appointed as a Senior Research Fellow in the Earth System Governance (ESG) global research alliance. The ESG alliance, which is headquartered in The Netherlands, is the world’s largest social science research network for studying the governance of global environmental change. Its objective is to explore political solutions and new governance mechanisms for coping with ongoing changes to Earth’s biological, geological and chemical systems. Fundamentally, the alliance has a normative aim to foster environmentally sustainable development because Earth System governance “is not only a question of institutional effectiveness, but also of political legitimacy and social justice.”
Senior Research Fellows in the ESG alliance are senior scientists and faculty members whose research is linked to major themes and questions of Earth System governance. Senior research fellows and research fellows are connected via a “bottom-up, dynamic and active network” to collaborate internationally “on research, debate ideas and disseminate information on relevant events and opportunities” in Earth System governance.
Professor Harris's research explores global and environmental politics, policy and ethics. He has been writing about climate change, especially climate governance and justice, for the better part of three decades. Professor Harris is author/editor of twenty-odd books, including What's Wrong with Climate Politics and How to Fix It (Polity), Global Ethics and Climate Change (Edinburgh University Press), the Routledge Handbook of Global Environmental Politics (Routledge) and Climate Change and Ocean Governance (Cambridge University Press). His written work has been published in more than 100 journal articles and book chapters.
