Professor Stephen Chiu on Hong Kong's integration with the mainland
- HK01 Newspaper ran a featured article on young people’s attitude towards politics in Hong Kong. Amid increasing exchanges with the mainland and the futile political bickering in Hong Kong, young people reckoned that the HK government is a puppet of the central government and attributed the existing social issues to the “one country, two systems” policy.
- Professor Stephen Chiu Wing-kai, Chair Professor at the Department of Social Sciences, was quoted as saying that in a 2016 poll, 72% of Hong Kong respondents reckoned the city should distance itself from the mainland. He reckoned Hong Kong should enhance national education and help students understand both bright and dark sides in China. He believed that student exchange programmes in universities are the best way to enhance Hongkongers' understanding of the mainland.
