Dr. Ma obtained his Ph.D. degree in Humanities from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) with concentrations in history and anthropology. His research primarily focuses on local history, with particular emphasis on Taoist communities, popular religion, intangible cultural heritage and death management in Hong Kong and Chinese societies. Prior to joining the Department of Social Sciences at Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) as a lecturer in 2017, he was a post-doctoral fellow at South China Research Center at HKUST conducting research in historical anthropology of China. His teaching experience also included lecturing history and culture subjects at the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies at EdUHK.
