'The Lifeworld of Adopted Children' (Hong Kong's first picture book about adopted children)
Do you know that adoption has had a long history in Hong Kong? Most of us might have heard of ‘adoption’; yet, adoptive families have remained in obscurity and not many of us really know much about them.
As there is lack of understanding toward adoption, Dr. Anita Chan Kit Wa (Department of Social Sciences, EdUHK) and Dr. Diana Kwok Kan (Department of Special Education and Counselling, EdUHK) have published the picture book “The Lifeworld of Adopted Children” and wish the public can get to know more about adoption and adoptive families.
This is not a usual picture book; it has no fictional characters and the contents are based on the lived experiences of thirteen adopted children aged from 6 to 17. It focuses on children’s family lifeworld, including their daily experiences, mundane activities, and key relationships. In the preface, Dr. Anita Chan raised some questions to the readers: ‘What is family? Who is your family? What does it take to be a family?’ In fact, the family experiences of adopted children and non-adopted children are pretty similar, which are made up of mundane activities, love and care, laughter and sharing, as well as nagging and quarrelling.
This picture book is published in Chinese, and we also provide bilingual online versions for public viewing.

The target readers of this book are primary school student, parents and the public. We plan to hold a series of public talks and workshops to share the lived experience of adoptive families, exploring the similarities and differences of different family types, in order to promote public awareness of adoptive families and encourage further appreciation of family diversities in Hong Kong.
The research and book projects are supported by the Research Grants Council, The Diversity, Equity and Social Inclusion Research Group (DESI), and the Department of Social Sciences of The Education University of Hong Kong. Every primary school in Hong Kong will be given a copy of this picture book, and we also reserve a limit number of free copies for the public who have attended the talks and workshops.
