A seasoned traveller
In the early 1970s as a young man, Professor Luk packed his knapsack and set off on his travels. He prepared himself by reading deeply to learn more about the countries he would visit. Then he embarked on a tour of Europe and Asia, ending up in Afghanistan just before the coup which was the first stage in the current tragedy of that country. In all these travels, he fended for himself. He never joined a package tour; he planned for himself an itinerary that would expose him to a wealth of cultures and experiences. What he learned on this trip was something he could never have learned from books. He strongly recommends young people to follow in his footsteps. "Roam around," he advises, "roam around, and do so without the comforts of home, without staying in starred hotels."
