Workshops Offered in Semester 2, 2022/23
Workshop series 6: Writing and Publishing Review Articles in High Impact Journals
The Graduate School is organising a series of seminars/workshops to enhance postgraduate students’ research and academic writing skills. Workshop 6 in semester 2 of 2022/23 on “Writing and Publishing Review Articles in High Impacts Journals” were held on 30 May 2023, and 47 postgraduate students participated in the seminar. Prof. Su Shiung LAM (Universiti Malaysia Terengganu) shared his experiences in reviewing and publishing review articles and provided suggestions for good practice with examples and how to write a high quality review paper. Prof LAM also highlighted the steps of writing review articles with examples in each section and how to write effectively.
Workshop series 5: Giving and Receiving Doctoral Writing Feedback and Doctoral Writing Genres: Monograph Thesis, Research Article, Thesis by Publication
The Graduate School is organising a series of seminars/workshops to enhance postgraduate students’ research and academic writing skills. Workshop 5 in semester 2 of 2022/23 on “Giving and Receiving Doctoral Writing Feedback” and “Doctoral Writing Genres: Monograph Thesis, Research Article, Thesis by Publication” were held on 25 April 2023, and 58 doctoral students participated in the seminar. Dr. Susan Carter (University of Auckland) provided suggestions for good practice with feedback on doctoral writing and how to get writing feedback and highlighted the different types of doctoral writing genres for helping to write effectively.
Workshop series 4: Doctoral Defense: In-text and Oral Examination
The Graduate School is organising a series of seminars/workshops to enhance postgraduate students’ research and academic writing skills. Workshop 4 in semester 2 of 2022/23 on “Doctoral Defense: In-text and Oral Examination” was held on 24 April 2023, and 67 doctoral students participated in the seminar. Dr. Susan Carter (University of Auckland) addressed what happens and what roles play out in the oral examination and discussed characteristics of different quality dissertations with descriptors gathered from various disciplines of academics. After the seminar, Dr. Carter also conducted individual consultations with eight doctoral students individually, and students had a great opportunity to discuss their difficulties in thesis writing and oral defense.
Workshop series 3: Heuristics for Novice Researchers - Learning from Trial and Error on Your Research Journey
The Graduate School is organising a series of workshops to enhance postgraduate students’ research and academic writing skills. Workshop 3 in semester 2 of 2022/23 on “Heuristics for Novice Researchers - Learning from Trial and Error on Your Research Journey” was held on 24 March 2023. 52 postgraduate students participated in the workshop. Dr. John Patkin shared the definition of heuristics, its roles in his research journey, and some valuable research tools for students. The workshop highlighted the importance of trials and errors and building positive work relationships in their research journey. Participants also joined different group activities, for example, sharing their power distance experience.
Workshop series 2: Interviewing and Transcribing
The Graduate School is organising a series of workshops to enhance postgraduate students’ research and academic writing skills. The second workshop in semester 2 of 2022/23 on “Interviewing and Transcribing” was held on 7 March 2023. 64 postgraduate students were participating in the workshop. Dr. John Patkin shared the major types of interviews with examples of the best practice of an interviewer, types of transcriptions after conducting interviews, and some transcription conventions. During the workshop, Dr. Patkin encouraged participants to join the activities by sharing their impressions by listening to interview samples and other transcription-related activities.
Workshop series 1: Power of Academic Word: Language Secrets of Scientific Conviction Speaker
The Graduate School is organising a series of workshops to enhance postgraduate students’ research and academic writing skills. The first workshop in semester 2 of 2022/23 on “Power of Academic Word: Language Secrets of Scientific Conviction Speaker” was held on February 3, 2023. Around 60 postgraduate students were participating in the workshop. Prof Olga Kim (Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University) shared the correlation between language and speech and the various definitions of scientific language “style” with examples. Prof Kim also explained the structure and organization of academic writing and elaborated language in different levels such as lexical, grammatical, syntactical, and compositional levels, which would be useful for building postgraduates’ writing competence across studies.
Workshops Offered in Semester 1, 2022/23
Workshop series 5: Single Case Experimental Design
The Graduate School is organising a series of workshops to enhance postgraduate students’ research and academic writing skills. The last workshop 5 in semester 1 of 2022/23 on “Single Case Experimental Design” was held on December 13, 2022. Around 30 postgraduate students were participating in the workshop. Prof Chen Shihui (Texas A&M University) shared how the single-case experimental designs are characterized by the researcher and explained an independent variable and repeated measurement of a dependent variable before (i.e., baseline) and after (i.e., intervention phase) introducing the independent variable. During the workshop, Prof Chen also provided some examples of the single-case design, which may be useful for doctoral students in their research development activities across studies.
Workshop series 4: Introduction to qualitative data analysis by using NVivo
The Graduate School is organising a series of workshops to enhance postgraduate students’ research and academic writing skills. Workshop 4 on “Introduction to qualitative data analysis by using NVivo” was held on December 7, 2022. Around 50 postgraduate students were participating in the workshop. Dr. SZETO, Sing Ying Elson shared an introductory speech for conducting qualitative data analysis and the typical features for using NVivo for data organisation and classification. During the workshop, Dr. SZETO introduced his experience of using NVivo to organize, store and analyse qualitative data and also presented how to conduct deeper analysis from other sources with examples from his research, analyse data with query and visualization tools, and ask questions about the data to identify themes and achieve more research result.
Workshop series 3: Academic presentation skills
The Graduate School is organising a series of workshops to enhance postgraduate students’ research and academic writing skills. Workshop 3 on“Academic presentation skills” was held on 7 November 2022. 44 postgraduate students were participating in the workshop. Dr John Patkin shared his philosophical guidance “Tell them what you will tell them, Tell them, Tell them what you told them” for academic presentations. During the workshop, Dr Patkin used 4 different kinds of worksheets to help students prepare their presentations. Participants also had the chance to present their research for 3 minutes to their peer fellows.
Workshop series 2: Analysis and Interpretation of Quantitative Data Using SPSS: Elementary Level
The Graduate School is organising a series of workshops to enhance postgraduate students’ research and academic writing skills. The second workshop on “Analysis and Interpretation of Quantitative Data Using SPSS: Elementary Level” was held on 25 October 2022. Around 64 postgraduate students were participating in the workshop. During the workshop, Prof LO Sing Kai explained the level of statistics interpreting quantitative data with examples. Prof Lo also showed a t-test; analysis of variance (ANOVA); paired t-test; null hypothesis with examples by running the SPSS in the workshop.
Workshop series 1: Using APA to overcome academic writing challenges
The Graduate School is organising a series of workshops to enhance postgraduate students’ research and academic writing skills. The first workshop on “Using APA to overcome academic writing challenges” was held on 6 October 2022. 52 postgraduate students were participating in the workshop. Dr John Patkin shared how APA Style can be employed effectively as an academic writing tool. During the workshop, Dr Patkin presented examples of paraphrasing, quoting, and summarizing alongside mini-case studies. Participants had the chance to work in groups to practise different styles of paraphrasing in sentences and paragraphs.
