The International Forum of Textbook Development and Virtual Conference on Teaching Chinese as an International Language took place on July 11, 2020 via Zoom at EdUHK, enabling scholars and practitioners in the field of teaching Chinese as an International language to meet and exchange ideas despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prof. SI Chung Mou, Head of the Department of Chinese Language Studies of EdUHK and Dr. CHOW Cheuk Fai, Stephen, Director of Knowledge Transfer Sub-Office of EdUHK delivered opening speeches, recognizing the efforts of the international forum in hoping that scholars and experts around the world can leverage this online forum for constructive discussions on teaching Chinese as an international language and the application of information technology in Chinese language education in this ‘new normal’.
The international forum invited Prof. LIU Lening from Columbia University, Prof. HSIN Shih-chang from National Tsing Hua University and Prof. TAN Chee Lay from Nanyang Technological University as advisors. Prof. LIU Lening and Prof. TAN Chee Lay gave keynote speeches. This forum brought together more than 200 scholars and practitioners from the US, Spain, Belarus, Austria, New Zealand, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Fifty-nine papers were presented in a total of fifteen sessions, with five parallel sessions held at the same time. Experts and scholars addressed issues on curriculum design, textbook development, pedagogical approaches, computer-assisted teaching and learning of TCSL and virtual conferences. Besides scholars, awardees of the Textbook Development Competition for TSCL held earlier were invited to present their winning works by explaining their design, application and expected learning outcomes to the audience to learn from the veteran teachers.
With the rise of e-teaching and e-learning as the irresistible general trend, this forum joins efforts with teachers and students of EdUHK as well as experts and scholars in the field to provide references for TCSL materials overseas, and to strive for a breakthrough in its teaching and learning models. As a new endeavor for online academic exchange of scholarly ideas, this forum sets the trend for new directions of TCSL and its interaction with information technology, and promotes academic exchange in the region and around the world as a precedent.
