Exploring Lingnan Culture:
Study Tour to Greater Bay Area – Guangzhou

To enhance students' understanding of the development of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and to cultivate their cultural literacy, the Department of Chinese Language Studies of the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) organized two Lingnan Cultural Study Tours to Guangzhou from 20 to 22 May 2024 and from 27 to 29 May 2024.

During the three days and two nights study tour, students visited Guangzhou Nanhai Middle School, a base of Lingnan culture with the history of over 100 years. Principal Yu Ying and Vice-Principal Peng Yan introduced their unique curriculum related to Lingnan culture and school’s development history. After the sharing, the students attended different workshops to get in touch with the cultural heritages: Cantonese opera, guangcai, grey sculpture and paper cutting.

With the interaction with students from Nanhai Middle School, EdUHK students gained a deeper understanding of the local culture and education in GBA. They also visited various cultural attractions in Guangzhou, including Zhenhai Tower, Shamian Island, Canton Tower, Yongqingfang, Chen Clan Ancestral Hall and Lingnan Cultural Park, to investigate the unique folk culture of Lingnan.

Upon the completion of this study tour, students got a taste of Lingnan culture and experienced its unique humanistic features. They also developed a stronger sense of national identity.
