Case Study 2
There was an embargo placed on the information by the School Principal of the Boys’ College. All
the Head of Departments were told at the start of a meeting that everything discussed must be
kept in strict confidence. They had to formally agree not to disclose the information to anyone
outside the Executive Team without express permission of the Principal. During the series of
meetings the HODs discussed and planned how the school would mange a merger with the
neighbouring Girls’ College and re‐structure to form three mini‐schools. The principal did not
want any knowledge of this impending change to be made known to anyone – parents or teachers
– until they had a clear strategy in place for implementing the change. An outcome of the merger
would be cost savings and the loss of a number of school positions.
What are your views on this strategy of ‘secrecy’?
