Select and Dissect

In this strategy school leaders focus on developing a number of core
messages and communicating these to their learning community
whilst, at the same time, actively listening to and interacting with
parents or staff for potential misunderstandings and barriers.

School leaders create a dialogue with parents or staff around these
selected messages or concepts – they ‘open channels of
communication’ – around these particular issues.
This strategy, for example, might be used to deliver a leader’s ‘vision’
statement of how a school might be successful. The leader expounds
their core vision and then puts great effort into ensuring that his
learning community both understand and share his/her vision.
People often have difficulty interpreting or making sense out of the
information thrust at them. The ‘Select & Dissect’ strategy
demonstrates the school leader’s enthusiastic endorsement of a
message and checks for parent feedback to see if the message was
                          understood.
