Guest Lecture: Human Rights and ASEAN: An empty promise or a genuine commitment?
You are cordially invited to attend the guest lecture delivered by Mr. Fung Ka Shing, Kalvin who is the PhD Candidate in Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies, Waseda University. Mr. Fung will discuss three topics in the guest lecture: a brief history of ASEAN and why it matters as a global citizen; the distinctive features of ASEAN as an institution will then be examined (e.g. their adherence to non-interference principles in International Relations, and attachment to sovereignty norms); the human rights conditions in Southeast Asia, and how ASEAN escalates/mitigates the problems (e.g. ethnic tensions (notably the Rohingya crisis) and the persistence of authoritarianism in the region).
