Dr. Gigi Lo is a Lecturer I at the Department of Social Sciences, Education University of Hong Kong. She obtained Bachelor, MPhil, and Doctoral degrees in Sociology from The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Dr. Lo is an educator, researcher, and community organizer. Her teaching interests encompass social innovation, NGO work, race and ethnicity, migration, and citizenship. She aims to empower students to become change-makers, actively promoting the well-being of their communities, particularly among vulnerable groups.
In her research, Dr. Lo primarily focuses on migration, citizenship, immigration detention, and social movements. She has studied the citizenship acquisition of Pakistanis in Hong Kong and their use of citizenship in everyday life. Additionally, she has investigated the experiences of immigration detainees, their family members, and the work of civil society in Hong Kong.
Dr. Lo actively engages in community service and demonstrates her commitment as the co-founder of "Translate for Her," an NGO dedicated to promoting the rights, social inclusion of ethnic minority women, and intercultural interactions. Through this organization, she integrates community research and empowerment work, aiming to promote equality and justice in the society.
