Objectives of Hall Life Education (HLE) (implemented from 2023/24 onwards)

Hall life education (HLE) is an integral part of the University’s non-formal education. Below are the objectives of the new HLE framework from 2023/24 onwards, as noted by the Student Affairs Committee at its 68th Meeting held on 20 March 2023:

  • to provide a safe and supportive living-learning environment where our student-residents can develop all-rounded personal capabilities and form positive characters, so that they can become informed and responsible citizens of society, the country and the world;
  • to offer a structured HLE programme to foster inter-personal, cross-disciplinary and cultural interaction among hall residents, faculty, alumni and the University at large within an intimate and vibrant community;
  • to promote outreach and active social engagement by student-residents through partnership with other units inside the University and local communities to promote experiential learning outside halls and/or the campus so as to enhance their professional and personal excellence;
  • to provide commonly shared residential life experiences that promote belongingness and connectedness in an inclusive community at large within the University; and
  • to promote green and sustainable lifestyle among the residents in the hall community that contributes to economic, social and environmental sustainability.

New HLE Framework and the Attendance Requirement for 2024/25

  • To promote student-residents’ active participation in HLE activities, starting from 2023/24 academic year, each student-resident is required to attend at least ONE activity per semester from each theme under Warden’s Series and any ONE activity from any theme under the Wellness Series.

  • Student-residents’ activity attendance will be recorded by the respective HLE Team. Student-residents who fail to meet the attendance requirement in each semester will result in a hall point deduction/semester on the hall application for the next residential year. For Student-residents who fail to attend one activity from each theme under Warden’s Series and one activity from either theme under Wellness Series in a semester, 2 points will be deducted for each theme per semester. For student-residents who have proven genuine difficulties in fulfilling the requirements, such as illness, FE, etc., a make-up session can be offered. The concerned student-resident may only be enrolled in one theme to prevent abuse of discretion. (Note: The HLE attendance requirement is not applicable to Research Postgraduate students.)
