Career Talk on Primary Education: In-Depth Sharing and Exchange

On March 20, Principal Cheng Lai-kuen of F.D.B.W.A. Chow Chin Yau School delivered a career talk titled “Are You Ready? Exploring the Educational Landscape of Hong Kong Aided Primary Schools: Curriculum Features, Teacher Roles, and Principal Expectations” for postgraduate students. The session at EdUHK’s Tai Po campus aimed to help aspiring educators gain deeper insight into the curriculum and employment practices of aided primary schools in Hong Kong, equipping them for their future careers.

She provided a detailed overview of the distinctive curriculum features, various job responsibilities, and recruitment criteria in aided primary schools. Principal Cheng emphasised that students pursuing a career in education should not only possess solid subject knowledge but also demonstrate qualities such as responsibility, politeness, strong communication skills, and teamwork, regardless of the position they apply for. Attendees were reminded to cultivate personal interests, broaden horizons, and maintain physical and mental well-being amid busy work and further studies, ensuring long-term resilience against the pressures of the teaching profession while finding fulfilment in their work.

In the open discussion, students shared their concerns and uncertainties about the job-hunting process. Principal Cheng encouraged them to recognise their strengths, highlight their uniqueness, stay updated on emerging trends in learning and teaching, and pursue continuous professional development. Students from Mainland China were advised to enhance their Cantonese proficiency through proactive practice to build a bilingual advantage in Putonghua and Cantonese.
