EdUHK Conference on Catering for Diverse Learning Needs
Over 200 experts, academics and frontline educators gathered today (11 July) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) for a conference entitled Catering for Diverse Learning Needs, with a view to acquiring up-to-date information and teaching ideas on learning diversity in order to apply such strategies in the classroom.
Organised by the Department of Special Education and Counselling (SEC) of EdUHK, the event was held to encourage academic exchange and experience sharing on issues related to learning diversity.
Speaking at the conference, Professor Hue Ming-tak, Head of the SEC, said, “The challenges teachers face nowadays in teaching a diverse classroom are often seen as a hindrance to effective schooling, as they can slow student learning. By examining practices used in different places and sharing our own experience at EdUHK today, I have every confidence that we can overcome such inequalities together and make a difference in classrooms by enhancing student learning.”
Professor Hue also introduced parallel sessions in the afternoon, which were held among SEC scholars, professionals from the Integrated Centre for Wellbeing, and local primary and secondary school teachers. Two expert educators from the University of Oxford were invited to share their views and experience at the event. Professor Maggie Snowling, President of St John's College, and Professor Charles Hulme from the University of Oxford delivered keynote speeches evolving around their Wellcome Language and Reading project, as well as interventions for reading and language difficulties, which aimed to help children with diverse learning needs overcome problems.
