On December 3, 2024, as part of the GEK2035 National Security Education in Hong Kong Schools: Practical Implications for Teachers course, Dr. Ka-wai Leung, the course coordinator, and Mr. Leung Wai-kit, former Chief Curriculum Development Officer (Moral, Civic, and National Education), visited Choi Nong Chi Tai School to exchange experiences and understand the effectiveness of its national security education initiatives. They were graciously welcomed by Principal Wong Kwok Ieng, Vice Principals Hau Sik Kau, and Kong Chin Iok.
Principal Wong emphasized the integral role of national security education in the school's curriculum. MVFS, an institution established by a patriotic organization in Macao, upholds a philosophy of patriotism and national education, ensuring students develop a comprehensive understanding of the country's current situation and development. During the visit, Siu Chi-hung, the Moral Education Officer, discussed National Constitution Day and Legal Education Week, while primary school teacher Ho Chun-hang showcased an interactive Basic Law education lesson utilizing tablet technology to enhance student engagement. Secondary school teacher Sze Siu-hung outlined activities organized by the Civic Education Promotion Unit, focusing on education about the Constitution, Basic Law, and national security through various means like classroom activities, campus events, online initiatives, and external competitions.
On December 4, 2024, Dr. Ka-wai Leung, Mr. Leung Wai Kit, together with Dr. Siu-wai Wu, Assistant Professor of the Department of International Education, visited another leading school in national security education, Hou Kong Middle School. They were warmly received by Vice Principal Chen Bu-qian, Director Wang Yu-lan, and Kang Yu-zhuan.
Vice Principal Chen introduced the comprehensive approach to national security education at Hou Kong Middle School. The school has implemented a range of on-campus and off-campus activities to increase understanding and awareness of national security among all teachers and students. Department heads shared their curriculum designs and activities using various media, and outstanding students and teachers shared how these initiatives deepened their understanding of national security's importance and their roles within it. Participants acknowledged the strong connection between national security, personal well-being, and family happiness, reinforcing their dedication to national security awareness and patriotism.
This visit provided the EDUHK team with valuable insights into the practical implementation of national security education at Choi Nong Chi Tai School and Hou Kong Middle School, inspiring and supporting their own educational endeavors.
