C&I Brings Teachers-to-be to Cheltenham and London, UK

2024-08-12

During 2-10 June, The Teaching Adventures: Exploring England trip was realised. This overseas learning experience, organised by the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (C&I), led a group of 20 undergraduates to the UK, all of whom were on their way to become teachers. The trip was designed to instil in them an international perspective and global mindset, so that they may develop lifelong learning and reflective inquiry skills as they construct their own teaching philosophy and identity.

See the highlights of their trip below:

After a 14-hour flight and a 2-hour coach journey, we arrived at Cheltenham – a town in Southwest England. We are particularly grateful to the great kindness and hospitality shown by The Cotswold School, Berkhampstead School, Christ Church Church of England Primary School, and Cheltenham Ladies’ College. At each of the schools, we were able to tour the campus, sit in and observe lessons, and speak with the teachers and principals. These schools covered independent and state, day and boarding, coeducational and single-sex, secondary, primary and early years provisions.

Throughout the various school visits, students were exposed to different school settings and curricula whilst engaging in different classroom instruction and management strategies. In groups, they were encouraged to link what they saw to their own experiences and examine one of the following themes in greater detail:

  • Curriculum, teaching and assessment
  • Whole-person development
  • Diversity
  • Classroom and behaviour management

The team also spent some time in London before returning to Hong Kong. We visited museums (namely the Science Museum, Natural History Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the British Museum) and considered how educational spaces like these could expand on our own teaching and learning. Students were also given some time to sightsee and explore British culture.

This excursion has broadened our horizons and given us a taste of what teaching and learning look like outside of Hong Kong. Reflecting on their week in the UK, all students agreed that this experience has better equipped them as teachers.
