Dr Kevin Yung and Ms Katrina Shi offered training to staff and students from Yunnan Normal University

Dr Kevin Yung, Associate Professor and Associate Head (International Engagement) of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and Associate Co-Director of Academy for Educational Development and Innovation, The Education University of Hong Kong, offered a training workshop with his PhD student Ms Yaqing Shi, Katrina to visitors from Yunnan Normal University on 4 December 2024. The participants included three doctoral students, seven master’s students, eight undergraduate students and two university teachers. The training workshop focused on the use of English in academic writing.

Dr Kevin Yung is experienced in teaching and researching English for academic purposes and Ms Katrina Shi is a trainer of IELTS and academic English. They shared their insights and expertise about the features of academic writing in English, including paragraph and sentence structures, argumentation, use of vocabulary, tone and style and grammar. The participants actively participated in discussion and class activities. They appreciated the concrete examples demonstrating the features covered, and found the content useful and practical for their academic studies.

This training workshop has not only benefited the visitors from Yunnan Normal University but also the trainers. “This training workshop offers me a valuable opportunity to gain teaching experience in the higher education context,” said Katrina. Kevin added that “it has also established potential research and teaching collaboration with staff and students from Yunnan Normal University and expanded our professional network with universities in Mainland China.”
