Plenary Speech by Dr Kevin Yung on the Future of Out-of-School Education in the Greater Bay Area

On October 25, 2024, Dr. Kevin Yung, Associate Head (International Engagement) and Associate Professor of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, The Education University of Hong Kong, was invited to give a talk at the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Education Exchange Symposium, organised by the Hong Kong Association of Extramural Education Professionals and co-organised by the Greater Bay Area Youth Association Education and Student Affairs Committee, graciously hosted by the Shenzhen Luohu School for Hong Kong Children.

Dr. Yung gave a plenary speech titled “The Future of High-Quality Out-of-School Education in the Greater Bay Area: Complementing Mainstream Education”, alongside Principal Chu Kwok Keung, Legislative Council Member (Education Sector) and the Principal of Ta Ku Ling Ling Ying Public School, who talked about value education in the Greater Bay Area. Dr Yung highlighted the importance of fostering students’ self-directed learning efficacy and motivation and drew attention to the exciting potential of AI-enabled adaptive learning technologies in supplementary tutoring, which could revolutionise the way students receive out-of-school educational support.

The presentations by the two plenary speakers resonated deeply with the educators, policymakers, and different stakeholders in Hong Kong and Mainland China at the symposium, including Mr. Wang Jianbo, Director of Luohu District Education Bureau Community Education Divison and Head of the Division, Ms. Huang Wen. They sparked meaningful discussions on how to effectively support students’ educational journeys both within and beyond the classroom with the leaders of Luohu School for Hong Kong Children, including Chairman of the Board, Mr. Zheng Jinghui, Supervisor Ms. Zheng Peipei, Advisor Mr. Huang Zhongqiang, and Principal Mr. Xiao Yinsheng, echoed by over fifty tutorial school leaders and education experts from Hong Kong and Shenzhen.

The event underscored the importance of closer collaboration between Hong Kong and Shenzhen and educational innovation through AI in addressing the evolving educational needs in the regions, setting the stage for future initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality and accessibility of education in the Greater Bay Area.
