A Prominent Biotech Scientist
Prof. Sun is the Chairman of department of Biology in Chinese University of Hong Kong; he is one of the prominent biotechnologists in Hong Kong.
Research Interest
Plant molecular biology and agricultural biotechnology
Participation in Ongoing Research Projects
1. Plants as bioreactors for production of high value
therapeutic proteins
2. Enhancement of plant nutritional value through molecular approach
3. Molecular cloning and expression of agriculturally important genes
Prof. Sun's representative research product - SUPER-Breeding Rice
With the sponsor from the Area of Excellence (AOE) Funding, Prof. Sun is working on a reasearch of "Super-breeding rice", which aims at solving the problem of food shortage due to the rapid population growth.
Major characteristics of "Super-Breeding rice" : 1. Rapid gowth rate Continuous research for improving the quality : 1. Enhancement of the nutritional quality |

Prof. Sun's Opinion
Biotech Industry
- Hong Kong possess a great potential to develop biotechnology
industry,
as we have knowledge, advanced equipment and techniques, as well as
the demand.
- However, Hong Kong should have it's own innovation
in order to be
successful in Biotechnology research and development.
Biotech Education
- There is a gap between college and secondary curricula
on
biotechnology.
- Although many colleges start to offer biotechnology
- related programs,
most secondary school students only learn a little knowledge about
genetics through the biology curriculum. It is actually not enough.
