3. Pedagogical Leadership

Pedagogical leadership may be defined as the leadership of learning. For instance, it is not sufficient
simply to teach numeracy; someone in the school must be able to accept the leadership for improving
numeracy. The question arises: what sort of leadership supports improvement in numeracy or, for
that matter, literacy, science or the arts?
Pedagogical leaders in schools play a critical role in the teaching and learning process by helping
teachers and other members of the school community to discover meaning in their duties, whilst
investing in them the capacity to bring about curriculum and pedagogical change.

Pedagogical leadership links curriculum development to an inspiring vision of a preferred future. It
also places teaching and learning at the centre of decision-making, thus heightening the level of
professional dialogue within a learning community about educational practices and encouraging
              individual innovation.
Pedagogical leadership roles can take many forms:

 Focusing on the quality of classroom practices and the raising of teaching standards.
 Moderating student assessment or promoting curriculum development

 Initiating and facilitating staff professional development.
 Gathering and monitoring evidence of learning
