-HK01, Ming Pao, Headline Daily, ODN and SCMP reported that the EDB’s Task Force on Review of School Curriculum released a consultation paper on 28 June, proposing keeping liberal studies as a mandatory subject in the HKDSE.
- Professor Stephen Chiu Wing-kai, Chair Professor at the Department of Social Sciences, said that although there is ample room for the liberal studies subject to improve, he believes the subject is successful and should remain as a compulsory subject. He disagreed with the view that young people become more radical due to the subject, which he said has actually made students more tolerant to different views and identify more with China.
- Professor Chiu warned that the roots of young people's unhappiness should not be traced solely to the lack of economic empowerment as their disenfranchisement was on so many levels. He said the young people's resentment does not stem from the anxiety over their personal lives but more from their pursuit of universal values and their distrust with of the local and central government.
