EdUHK launches a two-year life education project to promote tree conservation

The project aims to develop a platform for the community to contribute to the greening and re-greening in Hong Kong to raise public awareness of tree conservation and to promote the importance of Life Education.

- Professor John Lee Chi-kin, one of the co-project leaders, said a mobile app will be developed to facilitate citizens’ and students’ learning of visual tree assessment and will include a platform for users to upload tree assessment results and photographs. 

- Professor Jim Chi-yung, Research Chair Professor of Geography & Environmental Science, said according to a study by EdUHK, many of the trees uprooted by Typhoon Mangkhut last year had already been weakened by poor management. The research found that limited space and poor quality soil weakened trees to the extent they could not withstand storm force winds. He suggested joining the pits of two or more trees by a conduit that would allow tree roots to share an enlarged space and connect the tree pit to adjoining green areas.
