Kathryn “Katie” Dawson, Associate Professor of Theatre from The University of Texas at Austin, visited PS

2024-07-22

Thanks to the support of the Department of Psychology (PS), we were privileged to welcome Katie all the way from the University of Texas at Austin for a visit to PS on 12 July 2024. Apart from being a prominent scholar in Drama and Theatre herself, Katie has been working with Dr. YB Chung and Dr. Lawrence Ma as an external consultant in their pursuit of the Drama-based Pedagogy (DBP) initiative in Psychology Learning and Teaching (L&T) since 2019.

Besides meeting colleagues, students, and alumni of PS, Katie’s one-day itinerary primarily entails a seminar/workshop entitled “Power of Play: An Exploration of How and Why Drama-based Pedagogy (DBP) Can Be Used to Teach for Effective Learning in Psychology and Other Academic Areas”. The workshop drew an audience of approximately 25 attendees—colleagues, students, and alumni inclusive—from not only PS but also across the Faculty of Education and Human Development (FEHD).

During the workshop, Katie walked the attendees through her journey and line of cross-cultural work on DBP, in addition to a real-time demonstration on how some of the techniques could be applied in classroom settings to elevate engagement and optimize student learning. Riding on Katie’s seminar, Dr. Chung and Dr. Ma also shared their line of DBP-related endeavors in Psychology L&T at EdUHK.

The attendees gained valuable insights in nuances pertaining to applications of DBP in different domains of teaching and discussed potential opportunities for research collaboration with Katie. We encourage you to take full advantage of the chance to review the recorded video from the seminar, as it will be accessible online until mid August 2024.
