Dr HOU Wai Kai Wins Public Policy Research (PPR) Fund

2020-04-07

Congratulations to Dr HOU Wai Kai, Associate Professor of the Department of Psychology, for winning the grant in the Public Policy Research (PPR) Funding Scheme (Special Round) 2019/2020!

Project Title The Mental Health Impact of the Social Movements in Hong Kong: A Chance to Build Back Better Daily Life
About the Project Large-scale demonstrations and protests by Hong Kong residents rapidly transformed into regular pro-democracy protests across districts in Hong Kong. Peaceful protests in the beginning have escalated to violent clashes among citizens and between protestors and police on the streets and in shopping malls, siege and occupation of governmental buildings and universities, and break-in and vandalism of pro-China shops and banks. This population-based survey will be conducted to assess mental health, daily routines, and related factors of a population-representative sample of Hong Kong Chinese. The potential findings will be able to (1) provide a solid evidence base for addressing the mental health crisis of widespread social upheaval in Hong Kong, (2) point to feasible directions for developing cost-effective, behavioral strategies that could be easily understandable to the entire population, and (3) identify the specific needs of people with lower socioeconomic status and/or financial strain.
