Dr Susanna Yeung of PS and Dr Ng Mei Lee of ECE were awarded the silver medal at the International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada (iCAN) 2019 for their English learning kit for children.
The team developed a literacy play kit for English language learning to be used by parents at home. The kit, composed of a play manual, learning materials and a website, has been used by more than 150 parents in Hong Kong to engage their young children in home literacy play. Scientific evaluation of the kit has shown that the kit is able to enhance children’s English language learning, home literacy practice, and parent-child relationships in Hong Kong families.
“Play is an integral part of young children’s education. Children can learn English through play by using our kit.” Dr Ng said.
Dr Yeung believes the kit helps parents to form a habit of engaging play with young children and foster quality parent-child interactions. It can be used by parents from all walks of life.
iCAN is organised by the Toronto International Society of Innovation and Advanced Skills, and supported by Innovation Initiative Co-operative Inc., International Federation of Inventors’ Associations and World Invention Intellectual Property Associations. It engages innovators from all over the world.
As our iCAN award illustrates, FEHD encourages innovative research that helps parents from all walks of life. By impacting our research to wider community, we take research to the NEXT LEVEL.
